Richard Olsen olse4664@bellsouth.net My father-in-law passed away last week 1-4-05 during WWII he severed on the Sara. His name was Anthony P L(LEE) Skowron, in talking with older family members he joined after first being on the Ranger. My wife remember a plaque he had stating " Thanks from the Officers and Men of The SAratoga". We found 2 purple hearts and one DFC in his belongings. Any information would be appreciated not only by us but also his grandchildren. Thanks P.S. Yes "Moose" Skowron was related, he is his cousin.
lou fanticolla I'm very thankfull that the ship is being saved. As a former sailor on the Saratoga from 1984-1987 from VA-81/CVW17. I can tell you I'm thanking god, that you are saving the ship. This web/site brings back many many found memberies of my two cruises. One from April 1984-October 1984 and the other from August 1985-April 1986. But for me was October 10 1985 was the biggest day of my life. The Achille Lauro Story. It will 20 years this October since that day. I hope we will remember it as well of all the ship history from 1954-1995. Please let me know if you need any pichers and, anything that I do can to help? Thank you for reading this. Riding the anchor at Gitmo, painting the mascot green/ Our 1st skipper Capt Stroh. I was transferred from SARA to Staff Com6thFlt July 58 Cannes France when we headed to Beirut. Remained with the 6th Flt Staff till 1963. Ended up putting JFK in commission and retired from Navy 12/24/69 my 35 year retirement coming up next week. John DiMasso My dad, Wesley "Bud" Turner was a signal man on the Saratoga during WWII. He died in 1968 but if anyone remembers him, it sure would be fun to hear from you. He was 5'6" and had red hair. He was a golden gloves champion, during one of the years he served- although I am not sure which year and he would have been feather weight or light weight. He joined in 1939 when he was 17 years old - so depending on the month, the year would have been 1939 or 1940. He was stationed for a time in Florida as well.
Phyllis Monson pamonson@earthlink.net I was serving with VMA(AW)-533,(Marine A-6E/KA-6D aircraft), out of Cherry Point, NC when I made my first MED Cruise aboard CV-60. This was the 1983-84 timeframe when she had just completed the SLEP in Norfolk. Sara took me to many places I would never have traveled to in my lifetime. We left from Mayport, FL and spent 6-7 months at sea before returnin to Mayport. My Marine Corps career took me from fixed-wing aircraft to helicopters with travels to the West as well. Of all my military memories, I believe it was the time spent aboard the USS Saratoga I will reflect on the most. I retired in 1999, just afer hearing of the decision to decommission CV60, and now keep up with her museum plans in R.I. I look forward to a day when my children can walk her decks with me as I relive "The Good Ol' Days". SEMPER FI

Jeff firejeff67@cox.net The "Fighting Cock" was my first Navy ship after grduating from EM "A" School. Served TAD aboard in Norfolk Naval Shipyard whihle waiting orders to Nuclear Power School in Bainbridge MD. Was an EM3 when I got there - served onboard from mid 1973 to December 73. Will never forget the E Division CPO putting me in charge of an Aux room with like 5 guys under me and I didn't even know how to get to the Aux Room. Found one very experience E3 and he kept me sqaured away. many years later I never forgot the importance of identifying the man who knew what was going on and utilizing his talents. In fact, that became my motto as I went all the way to EMCM(SS). Yes not only a "nuke puke" but a sub sailor. But Saratoga was always my home. In fact, when I retired, I was living in Saratoga Springs, NY. I was there for the reunion and also acted as mentor for a third class when the ship was in Philly and sent a bunch of junior sailors to Saratoga for a week. Will always remember the "Sara"! Anyone knowing the whereabouts of EM3 Don Miller or EM3 John D'Adzio (spelling?) who also served at the same time let me know. I am also a volunteer on the USS Slater (DE766) a WWII destroyer escort that is a museum in Albany NY. A ship museum is a huge project for a small boy like the Slater so a super carrier is well, a super huge project and I wish you much luck. While at the Slater recently someone said the Saratoga had been scrapped, I'm happy to see from your website he was wrong but it shows you need to let people know about the effort to save your ship. Tyrone Phair typhair@rogers.com Just wanted to say that I was at the veterans day parade in New York city yesterday. And after the parade my wife and I went down the the USS Intrepid.They put on a USO show for everyboday and also had two bands from different schools play on the flight deck. The whole show was put on very well. The one sad thing was it was not our ship. I hope and dream of the day when it will be our turn to shine. The veterans of the Intrepid were asked to stand up and they got quite a welcome from the people there. I hope anyone who reads this email will once again relight the candle of hope that the guys running our show will have much success in the near future to bring about our own show. I know there are no more proud people then my fellow ship mates in wanting to keep our Sara alive both in our minds and our harts. Lets renew the fight to make our dream come true. P.S. And that goes for all you airgroup guys to (like me). VAH-9 Hoot Owls.

In 84'(Q-2), when I was just a "shower shoe", it happens to be the Air Boss yelling at you when aircraft are on approach and your "Lolly-gaggling on a Sunday stroll!" around the arresting gear. Except for that "butt chewing" (deserved), I had a great time aboard the Sara. Whomever were the cooks, salutes to you for the very best omlettes ever made!

I was attached to VA-75 Az assigned to Rear Admiral Commander Tuttle. She was called CV-60 then CVA-60 due to a new flight deck for F-14 Tomcats. My nickname was SUPERBAD. Took alot of ribbing from airwingers and ship's company because of that. She's a great ship with alot of history. I've met alot of people in the last 13 years, most just at work, who served aboard her. A mix of sailors and marines. All say the same...loved the ship and time spent aboard her. Glad to see so much interest in making this boat come back life!
Anthony Mitten I am curious as to the chances of this project every being completed. I went to R.I. three years ago for a reunion and had hoped to board the Sara at that time,but she was sitting,behind a fence along side the Forrestal, in Newport. I gave my donation at the Saratogo store at the mall. I wish I had been able to give more but it seems that what I was able to give doesn't come close to what is needed. Throw in the politics that seems to also be a problem, and it's no wonder things aren't moving. I did check the site about the "current status" of this project and found it to be a few months short of three years, since it was updated. This isn't a message to demean anyone that is involved in this undertaking. I know that it is a huge task but it seem that more is being done with this sub project, than the Sara. Best of luck with this and please give us an update,many people are waiting for a conclusion to this.

William Hart billh87@optonline.net Just returned from SARA's 53 reunion at Mobile, Al in the company of my shipmate of the metalsmith shop -Gerald Church and wife Jane, Ron Erb and his daughters, and my date Patti. The director of the museum project Frank Lennon left me with the impression that the prospects for success in saving SARATOGA are rosey!! If you want to have pride in helping to make it happen better get on the band wagon and send in your donation. Hurricane Ivan added some intrigue to our reunion but all's well that ends well. Our guest speaker was a survivor of the USS Indianapolis disaster (name escapes me) and his account of his personal experiences of being sunk by the Jap sub, and surviving adrift in the shark infested waters was most moving -the speaker has told his tale to many many audiences over the years and was extremely well received by our membership. We visited the battleship ALABAMA and submarine USS DRUM memorial park with its small fleet of vintage supersonic aircraft (which includes the 'BLACKBIRD', and a fine gift shop. The executive board of the Saratoga association provided us with another outstanding reunion, and deserves much praise. Chester Robinson

The yard birds couldn't believe the damage we had when we got back to Brooklyn, from a hurricane that we rode out at sea on that cruise. He was on board for many cruises and loved the ship. He passed away a few years ago, but I am glad to see the ship will remain to inspire people in the future. I hope Sara can be saved, but it's quite a challenge. As I write my own Saratoga is sitting on the desk - she was given to me as kitten by a civilian neighbor in 1988 and I named in her honor of the ship (which was in Portsmouth at the time). As others have said, I went aboard an 18 yr old boy and left a man. That Med cruise during the Lebanan crisis was nothing compared to what our men and women have been doing in the middle east now. Especially now on Memorial Day weekend. We lost quite a few shipmates on the Wespac cruise,we had a fire while in Singapore, that killed shipmates and tech reps. We also lost many pilots some did make it home some didn't. I think of these guys offend and how long ago it was that they sacrificed their lives for what we believed was a righteous cause. I pray everynight that the men and women that serve our country are protected from harm. Ihope that all who read this does the same and remember all those men and women that gave their "ALL" for us. I'm looking forward to the next one that's held near the midwest. The reunions really need to be attended by more crewmembers from the last 25 years. I was the only one there from the '80s, and as far as I know the '90s as well. Greeting to all old SARA hands. I served aboard the Big 60 From Dixie with HU-2 (DET 60) on the 64-65 Med Cruise. My first ship and my best memories. For the past several years I have been sailing past the SARATOGA every summer, aboard the S/V QUINNIPIAC, a 91 foot sail training schooner on which I volunteer as crewman. Seeing the SARA again made me think that someone else might wish to recall those "good old days" back in 64-65 and so I have started to post the monthly HU-2 WHIRLYBIRD news letters (squadron rag) on my web site. I served on the USS Saratoga in 1967-69, under Lt. Roberts, Chief Johhson, 1st Class Payne, in R Div. Med. Cruise 1967 - and Philly Dry Dock - 1969. I served aboard the Sara for a short time, Sept. 1961 until May 1962. Was in "G" division as an AO1. Left ship after Med cruise in May 1962 on annual leave. Because of a family tragedy, never returned to the Sara. Was transferred to Quonset Point, R.I for seperation from the Navy. Lost all contact with personell that I worked with except LTjg. Jud Brodie. Would like to hear from anyone aboard at that time in "G" Divison.

Served VAW 123 June 71 thru Dec.72. I met the ship in Naples and Left the ship in Subic Bay. Worked the flight deck as safety man. Couldn't wait to get home, now I can't remember why. Sara became a very large part of my life. I am now a pastor of a church in North Dakota. My how things change. If anyone out there remembers me, try not to remember some of the things that happened on liberty with me. It was almost another lifetime.

I entered NAS Oceana with VF-101 then transferred to VF-103 Fighter Squadron that was attached to the Saratoga taking care of the F-14 Tomcats. I was a hydraulic mechanic and plane captain, we endured some tough times on the flight deck. But what I remember most are my musical adventures while in the Navy on the Med Cruise. I played drums in a band with Tom Caldie, Smiley Garcia and Pat Chase (better known as Guitar Slim) and jammed with my friend John Modlin from Bandana. Sure would like to hear from all those guys now. We played at USO Naples, Malaga, and Barcelona, others forgotten as well. We won first place in the talent contest in Palermo, Sicily in 1979. We played for the French Navy and at The Ambassadors Club in Alexandira, Egypt. Lots of memories. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. Don't know if there is anything I could volunteer for, but I do have a yearbook and some music memorabilia from the USO entertainment. I am now disabled and live in Oklahoma. I served as Tractor King and Fly Three Petty Officer on the flight deck.I served between 1976 to 1981.I am currently a Police Officer in the city of Oakland, Ca.I'm still directing traffic, but they are smaller than F-14(s).I guess I still love living dangerously.
